Every day, Pick and Popovich will post one fake trade and explain why it makes sense for every team involved to make it. There are no parameters beyond fitting within the salary cap. Sometimes the trades will involve stars, others role players. They are not grounded in actual rumors, they just make sense on paper.
Orlando Magic Receive: Denver Nuggets Receive:
Danilo Gallinari Victor Oladipo
Why Orlando Would Make This Trade: Sooner or later, Orlando is going to have to decide between Victor Oladipo and Elfrid Payton. They just can’t build a functioning offense with Payton, Oladipo and Nikola Vucevic on the floor at the same time, it compromises spacing to an untenable degree. They’ve attempted to remedy this by playing Oladipo off of the bench, but that’s wasteful. Swapping him for Gallinari opens up the floor enough to make up for Elfrid Payton’s lack of shooting, and between Payton, Evan Fournier and human kangaroo Aaron Gordon the possibility for a passable defense still exists.
Why Denver Would Make This Trade: Denver can absorb the spacing hit of playing Oladipo with Emmanuel Mudiay. They’d likely just start Will Barton and Wilson Chandler as their forwards to offset it, and between those two and the passing of Nikola Jokic they could actually build an offense that can take advantage of having two ball-handlers without sacrificing space. Though Oladipo and Chandler are the only above-average defenders in that group, all four of their non-centers (and, if they chose to play Kenneth Faried minutes at center, all five of their players) fit within the same general height range. They could build a defense around switching everything. Ask the Warriors how effective that can be. Combine all of that with Oladipo’s youth and Denver would likely jump at this trade if given the chance.
