Every day, Pick and Popovich will post one fake trade and explain why it makes sense for every team involved to make it. There are no parameters beyond fitting within the salary cap. Sometimes the trades will involve stars, others role players. They are not grounded in actual rumors, they just make sense on paper. During the 2016 NBA Playoffs, each week will feature seven fake trades of one star player. This is Carmelo Anthony Week.
New York Knicks Receive: Cleveland Cavaliers Receive:
Kyrie Irving Carmelo Anthony
Tristan Thompson Kyle O’Quinn
Why New York would make this trade: Though they play different positions, Kyrie Irving and Carmelo Anthony are very similar players. Anthony is a bit better, Irving is a bit younger. The Knicks could maintain a very similar playing style with Irving but still shift their timeline closer to Kristaps Porzingis’ prime. Thompson is largely involved for cap reasons but hey, he’s a good player.
Why Cleveland would make this trade: Because it has been decreed by LeBron. He wants to play with his buddies, so the Cavs will go get his buddies should the opportunity arise. Besides, the Cavs are better when Matthew Dellavedova is playing point guard anyway. Cleveland’s net rating improves by .2 points per possession when Irving sits. Delly is just a better point guard for LeBron.
