Fake NBA Trade of the Day 5/4/16: Marc Gasol to the Rockets

Marc Gasol Rockets PI

Every day, Pick and Popovich will post one fake trade and explain why it makes sense for every team involved to make it. There are no parameters beyond fitting within the salary cap. Sometimes the trades will involve stars, others role players. They are not grounded in actual rumors, they just make sense on paper. During the 2016 NBA Playoffs, each week will feature seven fake trades of one star player. This is Marc Gasol Week.

Memphis Grizzlies Receive:                                           Houston Rockets Receive:

Clint Capela                                                                         Marc Gasol

Sam Dekker

Montrezl Harrell

K.J. McDaniels

2018 1st Round Pick

Why Memphis would make this trade: It’s simply a cavalcade of young talent. Capela headlines a package that doesn’t include a surefire star, but gives Memphis several younger pieces on good contracts that they can try out as major pieces of their next core. It wouldn’t be their first choice, but the trade market for 31-year-old centers isn’t particularly robust, so this could be the best they get offered.

Why Houston would make this trade: Gasol is the perfect partner for James Harden. He plays defense, passes, doesn’t need the ball and has a very low-key demeanor. The pair could be the two best players on an NBA champion rather easily, and with Trevor Ariza and Patrick Beverley still around, should be a part of one of the NBA’s better defenses right away.
