Every day, Pick and Popovich will post one fake trade and explain why it makes sense for every team involved to make it. There are no parameters beyond fitting within the salary cap. Sometimes the trades will involve stars, others role players. They are not grounded in actual rumors, they just make sense on paper. During the 2016 NBA Playoffs, each week will feature seven fake trades of one star player. This is Marc Gasol Week.
Memphis Grizzlies Receive: Orlando Magic Receive:
Nic Vucevic Marc Gasol
Why Memphis would make this trade: Aaron Gordon has All Star potential, but even if he never reaches that level this still nets the Grizzlies three promising young players who could help them rebuild rather quickly. Payton steps in for Mike Conley right away, and Vucevic can score no matter who he plays with.
Why Orlando would make this trade: It gives them direction. They can try to compete for a few years with Gasol and Victor Oladipo leading the way, and while winning might be nice, even if they never come close to a championship this at least gives their fans hope for a few years before they start over and rebuild again in a few years, this time hopefully getting the star out of their early draft picks they couldn’t find this time around.
