Fake NBA Trade of the Day 6/1/16: Monroe to Miami

Monroe Heat

Every day, Pick and Popovich will post one fake trade and explain why it makes sense for every team involved to make it. There are no parameters beyond fitting within the salary cap. Sometimes the trades will involve stars, others role players. They are not grounded in actual rumors, they just make sense on paper. During the 2016 NBA Playoffs, each week will feature seven fake trades of one star player. This is Greg Monroe Week.

Milwaukee Bucks Receive:                                                  Miami Heat Receive:

Goran Dragic                                                                           Greg Monroe

Why Miami would make this trade: If Hassan Whiteside leaves, and that’s admittedly a big if, the Heat are going to have a major hole at center. Considering how good Justise Winslow (and, if he returns, Chris Bosh) is defensively, the Heat could afford to use that position to juice up their offense a bit. It would also allow them to find a point guard who fits more naturally with Dwyane Wade, as Dragic is clearly uncomfortable playing off of the ball so much in a slower offense.

Why Milwaukee would make this trade: Dragic is the perfect point guard for this group. He’s excellent in the fast break and that would only be accentuated by the presence of Jason Kidd. He can also hit three’s, giving Milwaukee some of the spacing that they desperately need. Dragic in Milwaukee would create one of the most fun teams to watch in basketball, and could also serve as a bridge while the team rebuilds their roster around Giannis eventually taking over at point guard full time.
