Every day, Pick and Popovich will post one fake trade and explain why it makes sense for every team involved to make it. There are no parameters beyond fitting within the salary cap. Sometimes the trades will involve stars, others role players. They are not grounded in actual rumors, they just make sense on paper. During the 2016 NBA Playoffs, each week will feature seven fake trades of one star player. This is Danilo Gallinari Week.
Denver Nuggets Receive:
No. 6 Overall Pick
New Orleans Pelicans Receive:
Why Denver would make this trade: Denver couldn’t ask for a better young asset than the No. 6 pick. They could add someone like Buddy Hield or Jamal Murray, whose shooting would make them a perfect fit next to Emmanuel Mudiay, and their cap sheet is easily clean enough to absorb Asik’s bad contract.
Why New Orleans would make this trade: Gallo on his own isn’t worth the No. 6 pick, but add in the ability to dump Asik’s contract and this deal makes plenty of sense for the Pelicans. Between Gallo, Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday New Orleans would have a playoff-ready core right now, and they could create max space to build around the trio easily enough. If they wanted to make a run at, say, Dwight Howard to be a short-term defensive anchor so Davis could focus on offense, that would be easily doable.
