Every day, Pick and Popovich will post one fake trade and explain why it makes sense for every team involved to make it. There are no parameters beyond fitting within the salary cap. Sometimes the trades will involve stars, others role players. They are not grounded in actual rumors, they just make sense on paper.
Memphis Grizzlies Receive:
Why Indiana would make this trade: Vince Carter is still somehow a usable backup guard, but really, the Pacers need to get rid of Ellis to clear both cap space and minutes for a shooting guard who can actually make shots. They need more spacing in their lineup.
Why Philadelphia would make this trade: Ellis obviously makes more sense as a Mike Conley replacement, but he shoots well enough and plays enough defense for the deal to make sense either way. It makes little sense for Memphis to spend their cap space on the free agency market as they don’t have enough of it to get a real difference maker, so grabbing a secondary ball-handler now makes a fair bit of sense. They’d just have to find a small forward and then they’d be in business.
