Fake NBA Trade of the Day 7/10/16: Vucevic to New Orleans

Vucevic Pellies

Every day, Pick and Popovich will post one fake trade and explain why it makes sense for every team involved to make it. There are no parameters beyond fitting within the salary cap. Sometimes the trades will involve stars, others role players. They are not grounded in actual rumors, they just make sense on paper.

New Orleans Pelicans Receive:

Nikola Vucevic

Orlando Magic Receive:

Tyreke Evans

Why Orlando would make this trade: The Magic could really use another shot-creator, and even if Evans isn’t a point guard he can at least carry an offense for stretches

Why New Orleans would make this trade: Omer Asik really shouldn’t be a starter, and with Buddy Hield coming in there’s no longer a need for Evans. Vucevic could give the Pelicans some real scoring out of the center position without breaking the bank as his contract is very reasonable going forward.

Fake NBA Trade of the Day 7/9/16: Vucevic to Boston

Vucevic Celtics

Every day, Pick and Popovich will post one fake trade and explain why it makes sense for every team involved to make it. There are no parameters beyond fitting within the salary cap. Sometimes the trades will involve stars, others role players. They are not grounded in actual rumors, they just make sense on paper.

Boston Celtics Receive:

Nikola Vucevic

Magic Logo

Orlando Magic Receive:

Memphis’ 2019 1st Round Pick

Amir Johnson

Why Orlando would make this trade: Picks=valuable, Vucevic=gone.

Why Boston would make this trade: Vucevic can play center next to Al Horford or go to the bench at crunch time if the Celtics wanted to go small. In any case, Boston needs to win next year to attract another star free agent, and adding Vucevic helps them do that by giving them another scorer they can rely on off of their bench. His contract is eminently movable, so creating cap space next summer isn’t a problem.

Fake NBA Trade of the Day 7/8/16: Vucevic to Minnesota

Vucevic Wolves

Every day, Pick and Popovich will post one fake trade and explain why it makes sense for every team involved to make it. There are no parameters beyond fitting within the salary cap. Sometimes the trades will involve stars, others role players. They are not grounded in actual rumors, they just make sense on paper.

Minnesota Timberwolves Receive:

Nikola Vucevic

Magic Logo

Orlando Magic Receive:

Ricky Rubio

Why Orlando would make this trade: If the Magic insist on starting a point guard who can’t shoot they might as well start a good point guard who can’t shoot. In any case, a Rubio-Hezonja-Fournier-Ibaka-Biyombo lineup actually makes a fair bit of sense on both sides of the ball.

Why Minnesota would make this trade: If the Timberwolves insist on using Karl Anthony-Towns at power forward they might as well find a center who contributes on offense and has a bit of range.

Fake NBA Trade of the Day 7/7/16: Vucevic to the Lakers

Vucevic Lakers

Every day, Pick and Popovich will post one fake trade and explain why it makes sense for every team involved to make it. There are no parameters beyond fitting within the salary cap. Sometimes the trades will involve stars, others role players. They are not grounded in actual rumors, they just make sense on paper.

Lakers Logo

Los Angeles Lakers Receive:

Nikola Vucevic

Magic Logo

Orlando Magic Receive:

Nick Young

Lou Williams

Why Orlando would make this trade: Orlando doesn’t have shooters. Orlando needs shooters. See where I’m going with this?

Why Dallas would make this trade: The Lakers messed up on the Timofey Mozgov contract. We can all acknowledge that. Here’s their chance to solve that by getting Vucevic on a good contract. Combined, the duo at $29 million or so per year is fine.

Fake NBA Trade of the Day 7/5/16: Vucevic to Golden State

Vucevic Warriors

*Trade was written before Kevin Durant chose Golden State, pretend that he didn’t for this to work.

Every day, Pick and Popovich will post one fake trade and explain why it makes sense for every team involved to make it. There are no parameters beyond fitting within the salary cap. Sometimes the trades will involve stars, others role players. They are not grounded in actual rumors, they just make sense on paper.

Golden State Warriors Receive:

Nikola Vucevic

Bucks Logo

Milwaukee Bucks Receive:

Andrew Bogut

Magic Logo

Orlando Magic Receive:

Milwaukee’s 2018 1st Round Pick (Top-10 Protected)

Why Orlando would make this trade: Because picks are valuable. You can never have enough and Vucevic needs to be moved anyway.

Why Golden State would make this trade: Because Bogut is aging, and if they want to retain Festus Ezeli it makes sense to pair him with a center that has a different skill set in the name of diversity. They’ve never really had an offensive-center, and they really could’ve used one against Cleveland.

Why Milwaukee would make this trade: It’s time for Andrew Bogut to come home! They could use another rim-protector and if the price is a first-round pick when they should be peaking as a team, that seems reasonable.

Fake NBA Trade of the Day 7/4/16: Vucevic to San Antonio

Vucevic Spurs

Every day, Pick and Popovich will post one fake trade and explain why it makes sense for every team involved to make it. There are no parameters beyond fitting within the salary cap. Sometimes the trades will involve stars, others role players. They are not grounded in actual rumors, they just make sense on paper.

Chicago Bulls Receive:

Nikola Vucevic

Magic Logo

Orlando Magic Receive:

Boris Diaw

Patty Mills

Why Orlando would make this trade: Because they need a point guard who can shoot and Mills is ready for a bigger role than what he has in San Antonio. Plus, a combo forward who can pass like Diaw is always a nice piece.

Why San Antonio would make this trade: Because Vucevic can fill some of the scoring void that cost them their series with San Antonio. They’re the Spurs, they can always find a new backup point guard.

Fake NBA Trade of the Day 7/3/16: Brook to Houston

Brook Lopez Rockets

Every day, Pick and Popovich will post one fake trade and explain why it makes sense for every team involved to make it. There are no parameters beyond fitting within the salary cap. Sometimes the trades will involve stars, others role players. They are not grounded in actual rumors, they just make sense on paper.

Nets logo

Brooklyn Nets Receive:

Corey Brewer

K.J. McDaniels

Houston’s 2018 First Round Pick (Top-5 protected)

Rockets Logo

Houston Rockets Receive:

Brook Lopez

Why Brooklyn would make this trade: They get a worthwhile young project in McDaniels and a valuable first round pick for Brook Lopez, a player they don’t need as they obviously are no longer looking to compete.

Why Houston would make this trade: Not only do they get Brook Lopez without surrendering any major rotation players, but they also shed Brewer’s contract in the process. They could still be active in free agency but they’d at least guarantee themselves Lopez, a decent haul for the offseason on his own.
